Maternal Health

Who?
“Ensuring safe maternity is a way to make women equal citizens", says Dr Ayesha De Costa. She is a physician with a PhD in epidemiology. She has active research collaborations in China, Vietnam, Uganda, Finland, the UK and India. Ayesha coordinates several projects in the field of infectious diseases and maternal health.
Why?
India continues to have one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. The country accounts for 20% of global maternal deaths. “Women deserve better! All women, but especially poor women. We need to find innovative ways to provide access to life-saving care for poor women”, says Ayesha De Costa.
What?
The main objective of MATIND is to evaluate two innovative large-scale government programmes. The programmes were set up to promote childbirth in hospitals. They also aim to improve access to maternal healthcare for poor women. Hopefully, this will decrease maternal mortality among women living below the poverty line in India.
How?
The project involves dedicated researchers from Sweden, India, China and the UK. The two maternal healthcare programmes will be evaluated in terms of health outcomes, extended benefits of the programme and financial sustainability. Large-scale programmes for maternal health of this magnitude have never been evaluated before.
Reducing maternal death rate in India
It is hoped that the number of maternal deaths in India can be lowered by promoting hospital births
