Who?

“My vision is to work closer with universities in African countries since the African continent holds the world’s widest genetic diversity among humans. We need to make use of this diversity to solve scientific questions for the benefit of humanity, including the poorest", says Stefan Peterson, Professor of Global Health.

Why?

In Europe, giving birth is normally not associated with severe outcomes like death. In Africa, however, maternal mortality is high, despite the fact that affordable and appropriate treatments and utilities are available. Obstacles persist due to low utilisation and low quality of health facilities and treatments.

What?

Our goal is to improve the quality of maternal and new-born healthcare in Tanzania and Uganda. We ask the African health providers which obstacles prevent them from delivering the appropriate care and we suggest solutions. The solution is not always more money; sometimes a simple change of routines can save lives.

How?

Researchers from Tanzania, Uganda, Sweden, the UK and Germany are involved in EQUIP. We will compare health and quality outcomes in intervention and control districts, each covering 20–30 health facilities in Tanzania and Uganda. The intervention could serve as a model for the management of healthcare in low-resource settings.
