Who?

“As head of the Diabetes and Metabolism Research Unit at VHIR, I’m honoured that we are investigating an eye disease that is very common and places a heavy economic burden on society.I hope we will be able to improve the health of European citizens with this project by protecting them from diabetic retinopathy.”

Why?

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in developed countries. Losing eyesight is also the primary concern of diabetes patients. Current treatments are costly and have significant side-effects. “The EUROCONDOR project is very ambitious: we aim to prove that neuroprotection is a key to treating this disease.”

What?

EUROCONDOR aims to develop a new treatment for diabetic retinopathy - an eye disease affecting people with diabetes. “We want to find out whether pharmaceutical eye drops can prevent this disease from developing or progressing. These specific eye drops may protect the neural cells in the retina of the eye”, says Prof. Simó.

How?

EUROCONDOR brings together leading eye specialists, endocrinologists, basic researchers, a biopharmaceutical company and a European diabetes association. "Our aim is to open a new field of research, reduce the socio-economic burden of treating diabetic retinopathy and ultimately to improve the lives of people with diabetes."
