Research Profile

Who?

“Research on the brain and ageing requires strong interactions between multidisciplinary researchers”, says Michel Simonneau. He is enthusiastic when he talks about AgedBrainSYSBIO. Professor Simonneau is a group leader at the Inserm Center for Psychiatry & Neuroscience in Paris and he teaches Neurobiology at ENS Cachan.

Why?

Neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline are great public health challenges of this time. Nearly 50% of adults over 85 suffer from neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. We have a broad understanding of the biological principles of human ageing, but we have no curative drugs for the associated diseases yet.

What?

AgedBrainSYSBIO researchers study brain ageing. Prof. Simonneau: “We investigate the pathways and interactions involved in brain ageing. We aim to find therapeutic targets and biomarkers for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Our scientists focus in particular on protein networks involved in the communication between nerve cells”.

How?

Prof. Simonneau: "This ambitious project integrates numerous European and national initiatives. We receive the input of four small to medium-sized enterprises allowing us to get solutions for curing and preventing common age-related diseases. The links between academia and industry is the driving force of this work programme”.
