Research Profile

Who?

“My job is an adventure. It is exciting to discover two dozen new viruses as we did in Doñana. I´m a chemist specialised in virology and working in a team with ecologists and insect experts is a very enriching experience”, says Dr Tenorio, responsible at the Spanish Reference Laboratory for vector-borne viruses.

Why?

Mosquitos normally transmit West Nile virus between birds. Occasionally, humans are infected and this can cause neurological diseases and even death. There are West Nile disease outbreaks in new countries every year. Increasing our knowledge of the epidemiology and ecology of the virus may enable us to prevent such outbreaks.

What?

“Our aim is to understand the factors associated with West Nile disease emergence and spread in Europe. We will develop innovative tools for the prevention and control of the disease. To this end, we will bring together a multidisciplinary research team, devoted to protecting the health of European citizens.”

How?

The project exploits the expertise of excellent research groups from various countries and scientific disciplines. State-of-the-art knowledge of virology, entomology, ecology, epidemiology and modelling is used to understand the behaviour of the virus in countries including Russia, Israel, Austria, Italy, Spain and Senegal.
