Who?

“I feel like an explorer of the molecular world. I want to share this fascination with others through teaching”, says Guido Jenster, Professor of Experimental Urological Oncology at Erasmus University Medical Centre. Jenster and his team identified proteins that may help diagnose and predict the course of prostate cancer.

Why?

Prostate cancer is currently the most common form of cancer among males. It is also the second highest cause of cancer-related deaths in most European countries. Understanding the molecular basis of prostate cancer will greatly improve our ability to diagnose, treat, and ultimately prevent this devastating disease.

What?

The overall aim of PRO-NEST is to understand the molecular basis of prostate cancer. Its goal is to identify genes and proteins that reflect the disease state of the patient (so-called 'biological markers'). Another aim is to discover biological molecules that can be targeted to treat prostate cancer.

How?

Seventeen European laboratories are involved in PRO-NEST. They collaborate to train young researchers to investigate the molecular basis of prostate cancer. The EU grant enables PRO-NEST laboratories to fight this major European health problem by sharing their expertise and technological skills.
