"The human brain is the most complex machine we know of, and the most mysterious one."

Gather knowledge
This statement was made by the Human Brain Project. This project has brought together more than 80 scientists from leading European institutions. Their aim is to gather knowledge and combine all the data, all the way to the level of cells and molecules, in order to simulate a complete human brain in a supercomputer.

Giant telescope
The Human Brain Project is coordinated by Professor Henry Markram and his team at EPFL in Switzerland. Markram comments in a video on the website of the HBP: "It's like building a giant telescope, look deep into the brain, and ask questions that are impossible to answer experimentally and theoretically."

Flagship
The radical new approach to study the human mind has been selected as prestigious Flagship project by the European Commission. Flagship projects run for ten years and will receive funding of € 500 million.
“Never before have we awarded such a large grant”, explained Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission.
