Personalised screening

Scientists of the ASSURE project are developing methods to personalise breast cancer screening. This improved screening is based on breast density, age, gene mutations and family history. Personalised screening will increase the likelihood of early cancer detection. This should result in fewer deaths and an increased quality of life because less radical treatment is required.

Personalised prevention measures

"I was treating breast cancer patients and I asked myself: why do some women get this disease while others do not? If we knew that, we could prevent the disease. The COGS project will help to answer my question", says Per Hall of Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. COGS scientists want to calculate a person's risk for cancer. “We may be able to develop preventive medication to protect people at high cancer risk. Or we can advise them to alter their lifestyle and to have regular medical examinations.”

Personalised discussion of end of life wishes

Scientists of the ACTION project are developing methods that enable terminal cancer patients to express their personal views, values and treatment choices about their future care. “We want to help patients who are in the last stage of life to discuss painful topics”, says project coordinator Agnes van der Heide.
