Research Profile

Who?

Dr Koehler says: “I am fascinated by hormones as they affect our whole life, body, mood and mind. It is challenging and rewarding to work in an interdisciplinary team that offers holistic care to patients with disorders of sex development (DSD). These are medical conditions involving the reproductive system.”

Why?

Patients with disorders of sex development have to live with their special condition from birth. We want to improve their medical treatment, their health-related quality of life and psychological well-being and to help enhance their integration and participation in society.

What?

Our aim is to take a close look at all aspects of DSD treatment, to find ways to improve the quality of life of our patients and to communicate this knowledge widely. We will look at genital surgery, hormone therapy, metabolism, fertility, psychological interventions, gender assignment-issues, as well as cultural influences.

How?

In close collaboration with 15 pediatric clinics and research institutions in 6 European countries, we will evaluate the treatment and develop or adjust new clinical guidelines. An important tool to reach our aim is informing institutions, professionals, patient groups, clinics as well as the public about DSD and DSD treatment.
