Research Profile

Who?

“I want to translate basic knowledge into clinical possibilities. Stem cells fascinate me: the long bones of a human body contain stem cells and we depend on these cells for as long as we live", says Dr. Bernad, Research Professor in the Department of Immunology and Oncology of the National Biotechnology Centre in Spain.

Why?

“Myocardial infarctions, commonly known as heart attacks, are a leading cause of death in many countries. The heart muscle is damaged after a heart attack. This puts the patient at risk of life-threatening heart rhythm abnormalities. Treating the injured heart is a crucial challenge to modern medicine.”

What?

Prof. Antonio Bernad explains: “The CARE-MI consortium aims to develop a new therapy for people that suffered a heart attack. The treatment is based on the activation of stem cells that are located in the patient’s heart muscle. Our new therapy will be affordable, widely available and easy to apply.”

How?

CARE-MI is a large project funded by the European Union. Eighteen partners from several European countries are involved. The consortium brings together clinicians, regulatory consultants and experts in regenerative medicine, drug delivery, protein and therapeutic cell production, and animal experiments.
